Hauser is a small lakeside city in Kootenai County, set at the south end of Hauser Lake about 15 miles northwest of Coeur d'Alene. It had 761 residents in the 2020 census, so it still feels like a quiet country town while Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene and Spokane stay close.
The town grew up around the railroad. In the 1880s, Daniel Chase Corbin built a rail line through the area and named the junction for his friend Samuel T. Hauser, then governor of Montana Territory. The lake soon took the Hauser name too. Visitors who came by train for the fishing and swimming began settling around the shore, and Hauser incorporated as a city in 1947.
Today, 625-acre Hauser Lake is still the heart of the area. It's popular for boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing for bass, perch, crappie and trout, and it has produced several Idaho state record tiger muskies.
